Lack Of Press Coverage For Black Women

Ok I hate to do this but I must. I was just checking out the condolence videos on youtube for Latasha Norman the young college student that was found murdered by her boyfriend.
If and when you have the chance check out my girl jiatv and her post on it. There are others as well but this one I like because she doesn't bite her toungue on what she has to say.
GO JIA!

Then I got some more disturbing news that a young lady in Augusta, GA took her small babies into a bathroom and stabbed them both to death because she said that she and her boyfriend had gotten into a fight.

http://www.wsbtv.com/news/14734225/detail.html

I just got an email from a friend of mine about a young lady that has been missing here in Arkansas since November 11th and they just found her body under her house. Her boyfriend killed her.

http://www.katv.com/news/stories/1107/476867.html

My own mother in Milwaukee, Wisconsin burned alive by her boyfriend Tommy Wells two years ago. Helen Clark Finch was her name and the press was more interested in the life that she led and how many children that she bore than they were in catching her killer who had fled the state and was found in Arizona!

http://www.wisn.com/news/4648069/detail.html

I need to pause for a moment ya'll ......................

But I need to tell her story and others because someone needs to since the press seems to have forgotten that African American woman are being attacked, killed, and tortured in their own homes and by people that we love and we can't seem to get anyone to talk about it. Not only that we are attacking and killing as well our babies in fits of rage that can be addressed.

I can remember when my mother's assailant was on the run and I rushed home to be near her, I heard radio disc jockeys making fun of her and the amount of children that she had and that she was a welfare mother. But she was my momma ok?
I never heard about it on FOX, I never heard about it on CNN, NBC nowhere then it totally fizzed away it was like she was not important and to America she wasn't. Tommy Wells got thirty years for setting my mother on fire with lighter fluid while she was asleep because he believed according to reports that she was seeing someone else!

My mother would have been 53 this year. And Daniyah would have celebrated another birthday and Latasha Norman should have been preparing for christmas break and finals, Marquita Smith should have been doing the same here at UALR, and what about the mother and son and Dunbar Village? And what about the mother in Augusta? What caused her to go over the edge like that?

You know I'm not even sure what to say to this because where are the answers? How do we get the media coverage that we need to get help to our women and children faster like the paparazzi like coverage they are giving The Holloway Case or the new Peterson Case?

Could it possibly be that we are not in your face about it with them? Offering up a press crew to deal directly with the press in terms of airing it constantly and daily and hourly? Me thinks I may have something there.

I will be honest with you.. the only way that we got any coverage was when my sisters and I called the press conference and did a press release to ask for help in tracking down Tommy Wells. Otherwise we would have not had that coverage.

I am not saying that they need not be worried about us and have Geraldo Rivera on front lawns of crime scenes and other press but we need to be in their face about it too.

In terms of what we need to do as a people across the board? This is getting out of hand and seems to be coming to the forefront more and more but how do we get to the root and pull it out? Do we stop taking chances in life and love? Do we take finger prints and blood samples at the first encounter with someone and before we decide to let someone go through with a pregnancy that will lead to her killing her children? ( I dont even want to think about the sentence she is going to get as opposed to a white woman)

I wish I had an answer. I don't profess to have the answer at all but I do know this lets keep the grass roots thing going lets keep pushing for our city leaders and others in the community to stand up and get with us about solutions.
Ultimately here is the thing......we nee to teach our chidren and ourselves what the warning signs are and how to get out and how to get help when the pressure is to great.

Is that part of the curriculum in schools now? Or are non profit org spreading the message? If it is school a sista and lets help them help our people if its not lets do what we can and help out be the press and the educators..........mmm there in lies an idea...... an organized press team our brothers and sisters can turn to get the the press up in a situation.

But let me sit my tail down.......who am I?

A&P Committee Meeting Results and Conclusions

So the results are in for how much money was allocated to us this year for advertising and promotion.
If you would like to know what that is please be present at the January meeting of Juneteenth I am too embarrassed to tell you here what were given. But I understand why.
Let me give you my thoughts and then you make your own decision ok?
First off I have been emailing people about the A&P meeting for about two weeks. Not only that but this town is too small for people to so call forget or otherwise about this event when I myself was told about it filled out the paperwork and submitted it so we could be in for November's meeting.
Now I do understand there are those that are not able to attend because of work or other duties which really are none of my business but you must know this.
I have a seven month old and a four year old. I knew that if I did not go that we would not be able to ask for city support until January. I also knew no doubt that if I did not go no one would be there to represent us. I HAD TO GO. So I packed diaper bags, wipes, car seats, strollers and trudged up to the Municipal Building. Lili was one side KJ was in the aisle in his stroller on the other side of me. I sat there and watched as the press rolled in and then the lovely non black folks came in with their requests and other proposals for the city. Mind you my little ones were quiet as a mouse! I think it was because of the white people who knows? Lets just say I was there with my babies in tow trying to get the 10k we needed for funding.
Well first the Daffodil Festival representative gets up and speaks. She asked for the same thing they got last year and they got it. Did you know that one of the committee members is part of the Daffodil Festival Committee too?
Then they got to the local ad guy that did the Christmas commercial for CAMDEN. Ok cute then he submitted his bill and submitted other info to the committee.
Then it was my turn. I walked up there with KJ in one hand and Lili in the other and someone was kind enough to pass out our papers to the committee. I began my speech about how we were going to bring money to the city and how we were going to do this family reunion this year. What all we were going to do then I opened my mouth and asked for the 10k. I felt as if I was on the chopping block waiting for my neck to be sliced in two.
We were denied that amount the committee stated that they just did not have it. We would get less. Ok I figured that much but I should ask for what we said we would ask for. So I did.
Then a gentleman in the audience interrupted and said that there was no more money and here was why....there just was not enough money being spent in SE Ark to logically give out any more money mmm ok
Then the Boys and Girls Club group got up and asked for more money. They had provided the city with days of restaurant goers and fun seekers who ate locally, slept locally and did business locally. They got 3k more than they did for the Softball Tourney that brings in teams from various states to Camden and surrounding cities for lodging. Then the gentleman in the audience chimed in and said "I think we need to really look at how much business the community gets in the weeks before and during the event they sponso. We should be able to find funds for them to help bring more people here so many businesses can benefit from this event locally.
KJ started to cry and I got up to leave. Almost in tears because at that moment I realised something. As long as Juneteenth is not bringing dollars to Camden they will never "have enough money for us"
We did not prove to them that they would benefit from Juneteenth. That this African American event was a money maker for the city bottomline. I couldnt even begin to make my face to lie and say that it did because we LOST money not made any.
Something else that I learned today too is that while we are sitting up saying that "Those white folks don't want us to do nothing they dont want us to have anything here"
You know what? Thats not the case at all. It's about dollars with these people. Dont you all realise that these business owners are terrified that Camden is not ever going to recover and they may lose their whole lives? So why would they give us any more money for anything that is not going to boost their bottom line? I know I wouldnt. And let me tell you something they recongnized the lack of support today. Don't think they didnt. They know that when Juneteenth rolls around we as black folk are not patronzing their businesses cause we are not here we are in other cities celebrating and spending money there.
So when we meet again please know this up front we need to be able to generate revenue for Camden to get their support. I know we want to be able to talk about our freedom and our accomplishments as a people thats great but no movement was done completely alone (even Harriet Tubman had help) nor without some kind of financial support.
This even is about getting our children scholarships.......can we do that this year coming up? Can we make this "Queen City Family Reunion" bring the revenue to Camden and for us? I think we can.
My last thoughts on this is this.
We don't need to complain about what we see or what is being done to us because right now we are doing it to ourselves.
Stand up. Stand up.

Winfrey could help Obama draw women voters from Clinton

Story Highlights:
Oprah Winfrey will campaign with Sen. Obama in December
Popular talk show host will appear with Democratic candidate in early-voting states
Winfrey could help Obama close gap with Sen. Clinton by drawing women voters

Whoa whoa whoa hold up! I still have some questions that need to be answered by Senator Obama!

1. What are you going to do about health care reform? So many of us dont have it or are paying a mint for like me for coverage that covers nothing. I could use that 300 a month on something else.

2. What is your plan for getting us out of Iraq? How long is that going to take?

3. What about the Americans that are not in the Oprah tax bracket what are you offering them what are you telling them? Will there be more opportunity for opportunity for everyone if they want it?

4. No Child Left Behind - will you stop leaving them behind? Even though we know its not your bill

5.Will you really really hear us if you get elected? or will you turn a deaf ear to us?

6. What are your plans for safety and crimes against women and children in the country who are not of Oprah status?

Well I'm just asking and I could go on and on but those are just a few of the things I want to ask you.

Do you have the time brother? Can you spare the time without Oprah? Do you really think that she will help your campaign that much? I hope not. A stamp of approval on your forehead from her that says "Oprah Approved" does not mean we will vote for you like we buy the books she recommends.

Thats my two cents worth and I'm sticking it.

Check out the story when you have a moment

Somebody Help Please!

Alright South East Arkansas...I need your help no the Juneteenth Committee needs your help.
I am about to go here too because I have to and I know that I am going to hear about it via email or personally in the community but you know what it has to be said.

This year and the year before when we held the Juneteenth event and I was involved I can remember trying to be in more than one place and one time. Not only me but about three or four others as well.

Juneteenth 2008 should not be a repeat of that. And you know what if it is this is what we need not hear in our community. "Camden Juneteenth shole is sorry" " No wonder dont nobody come to Camden Juneteenth" and so on.

Then for me to hear people chat about what went wrong and so on makes me ill. I have only one thing to see. Why dont you come out and offer a hand. Why dont you come out and say you know what what can I do to help out for next year.

Take The Poll Who Would You Vote For?

Alright Camden! We know that the election here in the US is about one year away. Who would you vote for? Now dont tell me it would be Barack Obama just cause he's black and your point? Is he talking about the issues that are important to you your family and your community and this country? Do you know what is the candidates are talking about?
Ok first things first. Lets take a survey. This thing is the bomb. I found out my veiws are very much in line with John Edwards by a landslide of 81% similarity in views!
Go ahead and take a look at this survey. Just click on the picture and it will take you to the page to take the survey. Once you find out who you have similar view with, take the time to find out more about the candidate. And then you know what? Vote. I mean it we need to vote. For so long we have been told that our vote doesnt count then we dont vote just like they would rather we not do anyways.
Lets see what is out there instead of just Barack and Hillary and really the only real reason why some of want Hillary in office is because we believe that Bill will bring us back the era where most of us were doing ok and in some instances more than ok. ( I know I was)
But I don't want someone in office that need to be a chameleon and change her lingo to a southern accent to get my vote. Tell me what you are going to do and HOW when you get in office.
I don't want you to tell me to vote for your husband becuase he is black and because you are tto. Tell me what you are going to do and HOW. Really that would go for anyone running for president.
So take the survey find out where you stand and then research your match.
Till next time.
